The ability for life to organize is such a powerful and often overlooked characteristic. I wanted to come up with an innovative way of teaching this complex topic. The amazing thing about physics is that it is constantly seen in our daily life. You constantly live with entropy acting upon you every day. I used this to my advantage throughout the piece.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics notes that “the state of entropy of the entire universe, as an isolated system, will always increase over time”. In other words, our world is constantly moving towards disorder. This is why life is so interesting. At first glance, it appears that life can counteract entropy. It can build complex, large molecules, organelles, tissues, or organs. This is incredible to me and therefore was in inspiration for the video. I recognize, however, that this piece is an oversimplification of the process, because it implies life always works in the direction of organization, which is not the case. It harnesses it!
